NJ.com: Why Trump says college football is in ‘big trouble’
The President seems to be referring to the NCAA's settlement with college athletes for backpay and the coming of age of Name, Image & Likeness (NIL), where top-performers can be paid for the use of their NIL. I understand the traditional perspective that collegiate and amateur sports should probably not be used for this type of profiteering.
But consider that the Ivy League originated as an athletic association. Also, recall that the National Football League was tax-exempt until 2015. This shows that Americans love sports and its affiliation with college pride. Such a demand attracts big money.
Top-performing athletes entertain and meet that demand on many Saturdays, Thanksgiving and the Christmas Bowl games. Should they not get their fair share? Especially if their bodies are not able to sustain a prolonged career?
